Alcohol increases the concentration of a protein in the brain which leads to Alzheimer's desease

People who are alcohol abusers are at high risk of developing Alzheimer's disease - in recent years, a number of studies have been conducted confirming the relationship between high alcohol consumption and age-related neurodegeneration. Scientists from the Lomonosov Institute for Medical Research have conducted a number of studies confirming the relationship between high adherence to alcohol and age-related neurodegeneration. Scientists at the Feinstein Institute for Medical Research (New York) have discovered the new molecular mechanism underlying this relationship. It turned out that the ethanol penetrating into the brain activates the formation of tau-protein in nerve tissue.

Tau-protein is one of two toxic proteins that accumulate in the brain when Alzheimer's disease develops. Earlier studies have shown that alcohol abuse provokes the active deposit of another dangerous protein in the brain - beta-amyloid. The study described above revealed that the tau-protein also participates in brain damage when alcohol is regularly consumed. According to authors, this is due to the fact that under the influence of alcohol, brain cells secrete a substance called CIRP - a kind of signal molecules that warn neighboring neurons of the danger. CIRP is also produced when oxygen is scarce, ambient temperature is low, radiation is a threat, and other stress factors affect the brain.

In experiments on genetically modified mice, scientists found that the formation of large amounts of CIRP molecules when alcohol penetrates the brain provokes active tau-protein synthesis. Experts have yet to study the relationship detected. However, already today it is possible to say that both toxic proteins - both beta-amyloid and tau-protein - participate in the development of Alzheimer's disease in alcoholism. The authors emphasize that the highest risk of neurodegeneration in alcohol abuse is observed in people with a genetic predisposition to Alzheimer's disease, especially with hereditary early onset of the illness.
