A blood test will help identify Alzheimer's disease

Experts from Boston Brigham hospital (USA) discovered a new biomarker of Alzheimer's disease: it is enough to make a blood test to detect it. It is a protein that binds insulin-like growth factor 2 (IGFBP-2). To perform the study, which involved 1,600 people, the researchers used a variety of ways to detect age-related dementia, including MRI and cognitive assessment using tests, and measured the level of IGFBP-2 in blood plasma.

It turned out that the increase in protein levels correlates with other changes, indicating an increased risk of age-related dementia. Experts consider the measurement of IGFBP - 2 as a promising method due to its high accuracy and ease of use (no need to perform a cerebro-spinal punction or use special equipment). Also, according to scientists, further study of the new biomarker will help to understand the complex biological pathways underlying the development of Alzheimer's disease.
