Poor people die more often – a study involving 70 million people proved

People with low incomes die more frequently than wealthy people of the same age - the conclusion of Harvard University scientists. Experts have analyzed the data of 71 million U.S. residents, the general monitoring of patients lasted from 2004 to 2017.

Participants were registered with Medicare, the U.S. national health insurance program for people 65 years and older. 16.5% of these older people also participated in Medicaid, the government's health care program for people below the official poverty line.

Specialists compared morbidity and mortality rates in both groups. It was found that patients registered in two programs at once (indicating a low-income level) were twice as likely to be admitted to the hospital. And the probability of death within a year after hospitalization in 2017 was 26.7%, while among patients with the normal income it was 20.3%. The mortality rate within 30 days of admission to the hospital also differed: for people registered with Medicare only, it was 8.1%, while for patients who were simultaneously on the poverty register, it was 10.1%.

The experts noted that over the 13 years of observation, the difference in morbidity and mortality rates between poor and well-off pensioners has persisted despite the social welfare measures taken by the poor. Among the reasons for this situation are more stressful situations for people below the poverty line, poorer quality of nutrition and problems with access to health care.
