Added sugar intake is associated with the pericardial adipose tissue volume

Specialists from the School of Public Health at the University of Minnesota conducted an extensive study and found that eating foods high in sugar is associated with the accumulation of heart and abdominal fat. Fat deposits in such "dangerous" places threaten to develop cardiovascular disease and diabetes. The scientific article was published in the European Journal of Preventive Cardiology.

Often the products, besides natural sugar, also contain added sugar - the one that is mixed in the form of sugar or syrup. It is added to drinks, some dairy products, confectionery, baked goods, and other processed foods.

Excess sugar in the body is converted into fat, which has the property to accumulate in different locations. This triggers dangerous processes in the body and impairs many of its functions.

The study was attended by more than 3000 participants aged 18 to 30 years. The scientists analyzed the data of the volunteers on how much sugar they consumed, as well as the level of fat in the body. The observation of the participants lasted 20 years.

The results showed that sugar consumption was directly related to how much fat was stored in the body, primarily around internal organs. This increased the risk of heart and vascular diseases as well as diabetes mellitus.

The authors recommend to significantly reduce the amount of added sugar in the diet: drink water instead of sweet drinks, choose fruit instead of sweets. This will help to reduce the risk of disease development.
