Even small portions of milk a day increase the risk of breast cancer

Researchers from the University of Loma Linda (USA) believe that older women should not give preference to cow's milk, and should switch to its vegeterian substitutes. The alarming results of the study are presented in the International Journal of Epidemiology.

A team of American scientists has analyzed data on the health, lifestyle and diet of nearly 53,000 women. At the beginning of the study, the average age of the participants was 57 years and none of them was diagnosed with any type of cancer. After eight years of observation, more than a thousand women were diagnosed with breast cancer.

The results showed that the more milk present in women's daily diets, the higher their risk of developing breast cancer.

Moreover, even small portions increase the probability of disease. In women who drink only ¼ cup of milk a day, the risk of breast cancer is increased by 30%. Those who drink one cup daily are 50% more likely to develop breast cancer. And two or three cups of milk are associated with a 70-80 percent increase in risk. 

However, the consumption of milk products such as cheese or yogurt was not associated with the risk of breast cancer. Nor was there any link between the disease and the consumption of soy milk and soy products.

In addition, scientists found that at least a partial replacement of cow’sl milk with soya reduced the risk of cancer.

The authors of the study suggest that mature women should completely abandon cow's milk and instead switch to its vegeterian substitutes. However, more research is needed to confirm this hypothesis.

It is not yet known why natural milk increases breast cancer risk. Scientists think it is most likely due to the hormones that animals produce at lactation, which are inevitably present in cow's milk.
