Chronic stress leads to inflammation in the brain

American experts from the Department of psychiatry and behavioral health of the Medical College of Georgia at Augusta University have understood the complex relationship between stress, neuronal death in the brain and depression. They concluded that chronic stress disrupts the immune system, which triggers the development of inflammation in the brain, and then leads to severe depression. This is reported by Science Daily.

Scientists have considered the so-calleded complement system - a set of complex proteins presented in the blood that help the body fight infections. Also, it is important to suppress the excessive connectivity of neurons. However, the researchers believe this mechanism can get out of control and harm the brain, causing inflammation, synapse destruction, and depression. And the stress is the trigger for this.

Experts have found an increased content of protein C3, which is the basis of the entire complement system, in the brains of patients with depression. In particular, high concentrations were found in the prefrontal cortex of people who committed suicide. Experiments on laboratory mice have shown that the overactivity of this protein is due to chronic stress and can cause depression.

So far, the exact mechanism of action of stress in increasing the level of C3 is unknown. However, scientists are already developing chemical compounds that would inhibit protein expression. They hope this will lead to the creation of new therapies for inflammation in the brain and depression.
