Electrical Stimulator for managing Alzheimer's Disease

A new device developed by researchers at the University of Otago could help prevent Alzheimer's disease by stimulating the nervous system and the sense of smell with electrical impulses. The work was published in the journal Frontiers in Neuroscience.

Patients in the early stages of Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease are known to have impaired sense of smell. It has also previously been shown that proper olfactory function may play a key role in restoring consciousness after brain injuries.

Lead study author Yusuf Ozgur Çakmak, associate professor at Otago University, and his team believe that electrical pulses can "trigger" the olfactory system to reduce or reverse the onset of Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease, as well as awaken patients in comas.

The team unveiled a new device in the form of a strap that is worn on the head and creates weak electrical shocks that penetrate the skin to stimulate the olfactory system. Six electrodes are embedded in the strap, located on the bridge of the nose, at the top and bottom of the forehead and behind the ears.
