Fruits and vegetables help to deal with the symptoms of menopause

Female oestrogen hormones are significant in the functioning of organs and systems. Therefore, the decrease in estrogen levels associated with the onset of menopause affects the entire body, including the mental state. Scientists from Tehran University (Iran) have studied how eating fruits and vegetables affects the symptoms of menopause. 

About 400 women in postmenopause were involved in the study. The subjects showed somatic symptoms associated with reduced female hormone levels, such as increased pressure, tides, dry and thinning skin, hair and nail brittleness. There were also manifestations related to the malfunction of the genitourinary system, primarily urinary incontinence, and neurological disorders - irritability, emotional instability, memory impairment, reduced ability to concentrate, and so on.  

In the course of the study it was found that the use of large amounts of citrus fruits reduced the manifestation of all the negative symptoms of menopause. At the same time, consumption of vegetables in general, green leafy vegetables, dark yellow vegetables and, to a lesser extent, citrus fruits influenced the symptoms of the genitourinary system to a greater extent (in descending order). Reduction of somatic symptoms was caused by inclusion of large amount of fruits in the diet. According to the authors of the study, these results should be taken into account in the diet for women in menopause.
