Individualized diet and lifestyle are good for mental health

A new study by scientists at Binghamton University in the United States has found that individualized diet and lifestyle choices are necessary to improve mental health, taking into account age and gender. Women and men under and over 30 have different nutritional needs because of different degrees of brain maturity. The work was published in the journal Nutrients.

Researchers divided study participants into groups based on age (18-29 and 30 and older) and gender to examine the effects of diet, food system, degree of physical activity and other lifestyle conditions on mental health. More than 2,600 people participated in the study over a five-year period (2014 to 2019). The team conducted an online survey of respondents about their food intake, dietary practices, exercise, and other lifestyle factors. Experts collected data at different times and seasons and found important dietary and lifestyle factors that contributed to poor mental health and the development of anxiety and depression.

Important dietary and lifestyle approaches to improve mental well-being in young women were identified, which included eating breakfast daily, moderate to high frequency of exercise, low caffeine intake, and abstaining from fast food.

Nutrition and lifestyle approaches for improving mental well-being among mature women include daily exercise and breakfast consumption, as well as high fruit consumption and limited caffeine intake.

To improve mental well-being in young men, dietary and lifestyle approaches include frequent exercise, moderate consumption of dairy products, high consumption of meat, and low caffeine intake and abstinence from fast food.

Dietary approaches to improve the mental well-being of mature men include moderate consumption of nuts.
