Artificial neural network will help in the diagnosis of Alzheimer's and Parkinson's

Scientists from the laboratory of neuroscience and cognitive technologies of Innopolis University (Russia) jointly with experts from the University of münster (Germany) have developed an effective method for diagnosing age-related neurodegenerative diseases and other brain lesions using AI. 

Artificial neural networks are created as an analogue of biological neural networks: they are used in many scientific fields, including neuroscience, computer science, robotics, for data classification, forecasting, pattern recognition, etc. 

Besides, scientists have proved that an artificial neural network, which is built on the principles of the functioning of the human nervous system, can help in the diagnosis of brain lesions. The technology allows us to study the connections between the thalamus-the area responsible for collecting information from the senses, its processing and transmission to the cortical structures, and the cerebral cortex. In Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease, the connection between these areas is broken. 

In the experiment, the researchers implemented electrodes into the thalamus and cortex of mice, registered signals going from one area to another, and processed the information using artificial neural networks. Experts were able to detect a significant signal amplification in rodents suffering from epilepsy during an attack. 

Currently scientists are going to figure out new methods for the diagnosis of Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases: the study of the brain electrical activity via artificial neural network will help to better understand the processes emerging in the nervous system during the pathogenesis of neurodegenerative diseases.
