Medications for inflammation will help with Alzheimer's and depression

Professor Edward Ballmore of the University of Cambridge, in an article published in The Guardian magazine, discussed the role of anti-inflammatory drugs in the treatment of many diseases, including Alzheimer's disease and depression. The Professor emphasizes: to date, it has been proven that inflammatory processes play an important role in the development of depressive states, psychotic disorders, dementia, and many age-related diseases.

Many studies have shown that anti-inflammatory drugs also often act as antidepressants. However, the focus of the specialists who conducted these studies was not the mental but the physical health of the patients. Therefore, further in-depth study of this issue is necessary. It is important that people with high levels of inflammatory markers in the body take part in the experiments: this will help exclude from the study patients whose depressive disorders and cognitive disorders are not associated with inflammatory processes.

According to Ballmore, work in this area will lead to new ways to treat depression, psychosis, and neurodegenerative disorders, including Alzheimer's and Parkinson's. Therapeutic programs will include both anti-inflammatory medications and non-drug methods to combat inflammation. These include proper nutrition, physical activity, optimal sleep and wakefulness, and meditation practices.
