A biomarker, indicating the high risk of development of Alzheimer's, was identified

Scientists from Harvard University have discovered a new inflammatory biomarker in blood plasma -  sCD14 indicating an increased risk of age-related disorders in the brain. The study, conducted by experts, involved 1,588 people with an average age of 69 years, and 3,129 people with an average age of 72 years.

At the initial stage of the study, all participants underwent the measure of the biomarker sCD14 level, brain MRI, as well as cognitive tests. Re-examination under the same scheme was conducted seven years after the start of the study.

It turned out that an increase in the level of sCD14 in blood plasma per unit was associated with an increase in the risk of dementia by 12%. It was found that the high concentration of inflammatory biomarkers indicates an increased rate of aging of the brain, the active progression of atrophic changes (shrinkage) of the brain. The higher the level of sCD14 in the blood, the more pronounced are the signs of Alzheimer's disease, such as memory loss and cognitive impairment.

Experts note that this biomarker is detected in the early stages of dementia, and therefore can help in timely diagnosis.  Currently, there are no drugs that could reduce the level of sCD14, but it is established that anti-inflammatory therapy leads to a decrease in the concentration of this biomarker.
