Found immune T-cells open the way to creating a "universal" cancer therapy

Researchers from the University of Cardiff (UK) found a special type of T-lymphocytes, cells of the immune system, which were able to counteract cancer cells and do not touch healthy ones. Now scientists have a chance to develop a "universal" way to treat cancer. The study was published in the Nature Immunology journal.

On the surface of T-lymphocytes (or T-cells), some receptors recognize antigens that are dangerous to the body. Researchers from Cardiff have discovered T-lymphocytes with a new type of receptor — they recognize and destroy a wide range of cancer cells.

In vivo tests were performed on blood, lung, bowel, breast, bone, prostate, ovarian, and cervical cancer cells. The results showed that the lymphocytes destroyed the cancer cells and did not affect healthy ones.

It is unclear exactly how the T-lymphocyte distinguishes abnormal cells from healthy ones. It is known that its chemical receptor interacts with a molecule called MR1, which is on the surface of every cell in the human body, namely, recognizes many types of cancer through it.

Although this is not the first study in its field, scientists first described T-lymphocytes, which can "scan" cells through the MR1 molecule. According to experts, this type of T-cell can destroy many types of cancer, which is a great achievement for immunotherapy and opens up new ways to treat cancer.
