Negative perception of aging leads to depression and illness in the spouse

How a person perceives mature age depends on the quality of his aging: negative attitudes increase the risk of developing age-related diseases, premature deterioration of physical and mental activity. Scientists from the University of Michigan (USA) have found that negative perception of aging affects not only the health of the person, but also the health of his or her spouse.

About six thousand couples over 50 years of age participated in a study conducted by specialists from Michigan. The experts studied how aging attitudes affect the health of their second spouse. The focus of the scientists was on such aspects of health as physical ability to self-care (ability to dress, eat, wash, etc.), functional performance (for example, the ability to walk several blocks independently), the presence of chronic diseases, depressive symptoms, the state of cognitive abilities and the level of assessment of one's own health (whether a person feels healthy or sick).

It was found out that a positive assessment of their own health in old age in women has a positive impact on the physical health of their spouses. An optimistic view of aging in women encourages them to lead healthy lives, learn about nutrition, good habits and become "family experts" on health issues in old age. Such women are more active in taking care of their husbands' health, helping men adjust their lifestyle, which reduces the risk of age-related illness for both wife and husband. Negative attitudes toward aging in women, on the contrary, lead to the fact that they begin to take less care of both their own health and that of their husbands, which increases the probability of development and progression of physical illnesses in pairs.

At the same time, the study showed that pessimism about men's old age does not affect their wives' physical health, but often leads to depression in women. The study results show that when dealing with adverse physical and psychological trends in older people, it is also necessary to involve the spouse in the treatment process. In order to achieve better results, it is important to correct the attitudes related to aging in every person in a couple.
