The amount of water that you drink affects brain function in the elderly

How much water do you need to drink to stay healthy? Scientists from the University of Pennsylvania (USA) found that an excess of universal solvent also adversely affects the brain of older people, as well as its deficiency. Experts conducted a study in which they studied the effect of hydration (saturation of the body with water) on the thinking abilities of older people.

The experiment was attended by 2.5 thousand men and women over 60 years. The degree of hydration was determined by the content of chemical elements (sodium, potassium, glucose, and urea) in the blood of the subjects. Participants were offered several tests to assess memory, problem-solving ability, and fluency. It turned out that people with optimal hydration levels showed better results than participants with insufficient or excessive water consumption. At the same time, low hydration adversely affected the quality of attention first and foremost.

Scientists advise older people to pay attention to their drinking regime: as we age, water supplies decrease due to muscle contraction, the kidneys are less able to "hold" water, and the hormonal signals that cause thirst and motivate water consumption are dulled.

According to experts, the optimal daily volume of water is 2 liters for women and 2.5 liters for men. However, recommendations may vary depending on the situation: thus, the need for water increases in the case of taking diuretics, at elevated ambient temperature, additional physical activity.
