Life expectancy can be predicted by the amount of protein, fat and carbohydrate consumed

In a global study by the University of Sydney, Australia, specialists studied how macronutrient reserves (proteins, fats and carbohydrates) are associated with the risk of death at different ages. They published their results in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Macronutrients are found in foods and are a major source of energy.

A previous study has already shown how many calories consumed per day are associated with a minimum mortality rate at an older age - about 3500 kcal. 500 kcal per day minimized mortality at any age. However, it was still unknown what the calorie composition should be in terms of protein, fat and carbohydrate content.

Thus, in a new study, experts found that the composition of macronutrients, which reduces mortality to a minimum, varies with age. Up to 50 years from 40 to 45 percent of energy the body should receive from fats and carbohydrates and 16 percent - from proteins. However, at an older age this percentage changes: to reduce the risk of mortality, the intake of fats and proteins must be reduced to 22 and 11 percent respectively, they must be replaced by carbohydrates - up to 65 percent of total calories.

These results have been obtained by analyzing the survival rate of people in 103 countries and data on their diets, including macronutrients. Scientists found that even after being adjusted for time and economic factors, amount of protein, fat and carbohydrate in diet remained strong predictors of age-related mortality.
