Activity diversity will help to maintain the strength of the mind after 30 years

Scientists at the University of South Florida (USA) believe that the best way to support cognitive function in adulthood is to have multi-dimensional activity during the day. A study is published in The Journals of Gerontology.

According to American experts, the brain should be constantly under stress, as it is an effective way to slow down the aging process. And although every day a person does different things: cooking, cleaning, reading, watching TV, playing sports - it is not enough for the brain to be really busy. Scientists believe that setting more tasks and their performance can slow down the age-related declining of cognitive function.

The study involved 732 people aged 34 to 84 years. Volunteers described their lifestyle and daily activities and passed cognitive tests. They did the same 10 years later.

The results showed that people who reported a variety of daily activities (e.g. learning something new, including languages, on an ongoing basis) demonstrated better cognitive ability than those who reported routine spending time.

The authors of the study believe that diverse activities develop intellectual and social skills, as well as slow the progression of Alzheimer's disease, because they have a positive effect on working and long-term memory, executive functions, attentiveness, speed of information processing and reasoning ability. In this way, cognitive health can be maintained in adulthood.
