Walking or сycling is associated with a reduced risk of early death and illness

People who go to work by bike and subway live longer than those who get to work by car. This conclusion was reached by scientists from Cambridge University and Imperial College London, after analyzing the results of a large-scale study. It involved over 300,000 people from England and Wales. The duration of observation of the subjects was 25 years. During this period, scientists collected data on how people got to work and also analyzed information about their health, and in the case of death of participants - the cause of death.

People who chose bicycle were found to be 20% less likely to die early and 20% less likely to die from cardiovascular disease than those who rode a car. Cyclists were also 16% less likely to die from cancer and 11% less likely to have a malignant tumor.

People who reached their job on foot were 7% less likely to be diagnosed with cancer, but there was no marked decline in the risk of heart and vascular disease. According to the authors, this may happen due to the low socio-economic status of people who are forced to save money on the purchase of vehicles or travel by public transport. In this situation, the negative factors associated with living in poverty may outweigh the benefits of daily physical activity.

At the same time, those who used the subway and trains to get to work had advantages compared to motorists: the risk of early death was 10% lower, the probability of dying from cardiovascular disease was 20% lower, and cancer was 12% less common. According to scientists, on the one hand, this is due to the fact that people most often get to the subway or train by bike or on foot, which provided daily physical activity. On the other hand, the ability to use rail transport on a regular basis indicates constant income.
