The postwar generation's brain started to degrade

Scientists at Ohio University concluded that people born between 1948 and 1965 - the so-called baby boomers - had worse cognitive abilities than earlier generations. Since the late 19th century, there has been an improvement in the cognitive ability of people's brains from generation to generation, reaching a peak in wartime and early postwar children (born 1942-1947). However, children who were born closer to the fifties suffered a marked regression.

In the research spent by the American scientists, over 30 thousand baby boomers have taken part: it was Americans of different nationalities, representatives of various social classes. All participants were tested to assess cognitive brain functions. In comparison with representatives of older generations, the baby boomers scored the lowest number of points. And this tendency was already observed in so-called "early baby boomers" (born in 1948-1953), increasing in people who were born in the middle and at the end of a baby boom. According to scientists, this situation may lead to a sharp increase in the number of dementia patients in the near future.

Today scientists are trying to understand the cause of cognitive degradation of people born in the period from 1848 to 1965. The analysis shows that, in general, their childhood was more prosperous than their predecessors born in the late 19th - early 20th century. Baby Boomers were also more likely than their predecessors to be educated, gain employment, and generally maintain an adequate level of well-being.

At the same time, among the reasons that accelerated the deterioration of cognitive faculties, experts named the tendency of baby boomers to depression, loneliness, divorce, and remarriage as characteristic of the generation. In addition, despite increased wealth compared to previous generations, baby boomers often suffered from the inability to achieve material well-being.

Specialists call progressive hypodynamy in the generation of baby boomers, an excess of fast food, and, as a result, the development of obesity, a widespread cardiovascular disease, hypertension, diabetes mellitus an important risk factor for cognitive decline. All these diseases result in nutrition disorders in the brain and problems with its functioning.

- It was so surprising to observe that a decrease in cognitive function was observed in all groups of baby boomers, regardless of gender, ethnicity, and level of well-being," says the author of the study, Professor Hui Zheng. - This trend was only slightly decreasing in the richest and most educated people in the generation.
