The destruction of the protective barrier of the brain leads to inflammation and the development of Alzheimer's

Between the brain and the circulatory system, there is a blood-brain barrier. Only some molecules and cells can penetrate it, in particular, those having the "right of access" to the nervous system. Scientists believe that it is the violation of the permeability of this barrier that leads to premature aging of the brain, the development of Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases.

So, in a study conducted by experts from the universities of Berkeley, Ben-Gurion and the University of California, it was proved that neurodegenerative changes in the brain occur due to the penetration of inflammatory agents through the blood-brain barrier. Over the years chronic inflammatory processes often develop in the body: for example, it may be due to being overweight. In this case, the health of a person may not suffer, but the substances associated with the inflammatory process circulate in the body.

Increased permeability of the blood-brain barrier, which is observed in 60% of older people, leads to the penetration of inflammatory molecules and proteins into the brain. It is believed that this is the reason why albumin appears in the brain of older people. Experiments on mice have shown that the introduction of this protein into the brain of animals leads to premature aging. In another study conducted by the same group of scientists, it was shown that the penetration of foreign substances through the barrier leads to changes in the bioelectric activity of the brain: during the EEG procedure, waves characteristic of the brain of patients with epilepsy or Alzheimer's are recorded. 

Scientists have not only discovered the causes and described the nature of negative changes in the nervous system of aging people but also developed a way to stop this process. For this purpose, drugs that suppress the formation of Tgfß protein are used. Experiments on mice have shown that the combined introduction of this protein and albumin into the brain of animals quickly leads to the development of inflammation and destructive disorders in the brain. At the same time, drugs that block the synthesis of Tgfß allow not only to cope with inflammation but also to restore the integrity of the blood-brain barrier in the brain.
