Researchers believe that sexual activity before bedtime may help reduce symptoms of insomnia, sleep disturbance, and stress. This is helped by increased levels of oxytocin and prolactin, as well as decreased cortisol levels after orgasm, the CMAJ reports.
Recommendations for treating insomnia rarely mention a potential non-drug sleeping aid that is free and available to most people: sex, whether with a partner or solo. After orgasm, oxytocin and prolactin levels rise and cortisol levels fall. And increasing wellness hormone levels in the body and lowering stress hormone levels can help you sleep better.
Some studies show that sex can reduce stress and help people with insomnia fall asleep. A University of Ottawa review concluded that sex is "a possible alternative or adjunct to other strategies for treating insomnia."
The study, conducted among 778 people by a team from the University of Central Queensland in Australia, found that men and women fell asleep faster and slept much better after orgasm. Dr. Caroline Pucall, director of the Sexual Research Laboratory at Queen's University in Ontario, reports that many of her patients use masturbation as a sleeping aid. It has become part of their bedtime routine that helps them relax and fall asleep.
