Muscle weakness in the elderly can be explained by vitamin D deficiency

Lack of vitamin D in the body can negatively affect the work of the muscular system in people 60 years and older - this is the conclusion of researchers from Trinity College in Dublin (Ireland). According to the portal ETHealthworld, maintaining normal levels of this vitamin throughout life is the key to successful aging, as it improves mobility, independence, quality of life of the elderly, reduces the risk of falls and physical weakness.

The researchers analyzed data from 4,157 patients aged 60 years and older. The results showed that participants with low levels of vitamin D in the body were almost twice as likely to develop muscle weakness compared to those whose vitamin levels were normal (40.4% vs. 21.6%).

But disorders of the muscular system were three times more common-25.2% vs. 7.9%.

Thus, vitamin D deficiency can significantly impair muscle function in adulthood, which directly affects performance and reduced quality of life. The authors of the study note that it is necessary to monitor vitamin levels and carry out appropriate prevention: choose the appropriate diet containing foods rich in micronutrients, regularly engage in physical activity, lead a healthy lifestyle.
