A cream that blocks aging at the molecular level is created

Scientists from Drexel University (Philadelphia, USA) have tested a cream that stops skin aging. The composition of the cosmetic product includes rapamycin-immunosuppressant, which is widely used in transplantation to prevent the rejection of foreign tissues. 

It has already been proved that rapamycin blocks the activity of the protein p16 INK4A, which is actively involved in the aging process. Animal experiments have shown that the use of this tool can prolong the life of mice. At the same time, the use of rapamycin as an anti-aging drug is fraught with the manifestation of various similar effects. That is why scientists decided to include this substance in the composition of the means for local use and create a skin cream based on it. 

In earlier studies, experts have found that the more actively P16 INK4A protein is synthesized in the skin cells, the faster-aging process is: skin elasticity decreases, fine wrinkles appear, pigmentation is disturbed, healing processes slow down and the risk of infection of wounds increases.

At the initial stage of the study, 13 people over the age of 40 with the signs of aging of the skin of the hands applied a cream with rapamycin to the skin of one hand for eight months every 1-2 days. A placebo cream was applied to the other hand. After this period, the scientists assessed the condition of the skin visually, and a biopsy of the skin was also carried out. It turned out that the majority of participants' skin treatment with the cream with rapamycin led to a decrease in the number of fine wrinkles, the skin became denser, color became smooth, a bulge of veins and tendons decreased.

Histochemical analysis of the skin showed that the content of collagen VII almost doubled in the basal layer of the skin, the deficiency of which quickly leads to aging, also the number of defective, slowly dividing cells decreased, too. At the same time, the increase in the content of rapamycin in the blood did not occur, which allowed us to conclude: the effect of the cream was local, and therefore did not lead to complications characteristic of the systemic effects of this substance. Now experts are preparing for a larger study of anti-aging cream.
