Scientists: to achieve happiness it is important sometimes to lose self-control

A person with a developed sense of self-control sometimes deprives himself of the momentary joys of life to achieve certain goals: for example, to get in shape or learn a foreign language. And, at first glance, it seems that people who know how to control themselves look satisfied and happy. However, research results from scientists at the University of Zurich (Switzerland) and Radboud University (the Netherlands) suggest that an equally happy feeling brings pleasant activities when people are not into achieving goals. In their opinion, it is crucial sometimes to lose self-control and enjoy simple things.

‘’Self-control is very important," says lead author Katharina Berkner. - But you also have to devote time to hedonism. The ability to experience pleasure and enjoy the moment without intrusive thoughts brings the same satisfaction with life as a successful self-control.

Scientists conducted a survey to assess the level of hedonism among participants. It turned out that those who often rest, but during this time are distracted by thoughts about problems, are less happy than those who spend less time on rest, but at such moments do not think about anything. In addition, the latter demonstrate less anxiety, sadness, and stress, they are often more successful in achieving a long-term goal.

However, if you just lie on the sofa more, eat a lot of delicious food and meet friends, you will not be happier, the authors of the study note. It is important that the hedonistic and long-term goals do not contradict each other, but, on the contrary, complement in achieving well-being and health, to be in a reasonable balance. To do so, you need to plan your vacation and during this time to limit yourself from other activities and free the mind from worries and distractions.
