Scientists have identified ten factors that increase the risk of Alzheimer's

An international group of scientists has published data on key risk factors for Alzheimer's disease. The findings are based on 396 studies from various universities around the world. The experts managed to identify 19 factors, 10 (group A) of which are supported by strong evidence, and 9 (group B) have a less pronounced correlation with the disease.

In group A - risk factors, the presence of which significantly increases the risk of Alzheimer's - scientists attributed low education, low cognitive activity, obesity in old age, depression, stress, diabetes, head trauma, hypertension in old age, low blood pressure, as well as high levels of homocysteine - a sulfur-containing amino acid.

In group B - risk factors with an insufficient level of exposure to Alzheimer's - scientists classified obesity in middle age, drastic weight loss in old age, atrial fibrillation, smoking, sleep disorders, weakness, the presence of cerebrovascular disease (primary atherosclerosis of brain vessels).

- The development of diseases such as Alzheimer's is due to a complex combination of age-related changes, genetics, and lifestyle," explains one of the authors of the publication, the head of research at Alzheimer's Research UK, Dr. Rosa Sanchos. - The previous analysis, conducted in 2017, identified only nine risk factors. In the current report, after analyzing a large number of publications, we found new factors such as head trauma, high levels of homocysteine, and some others. The identification of risk factors is an crucial starting point for further research in order to find methods that can limit their harmful effects on people and enable them to live as long as possible without dementia.
