Scientists believe that aging is a "general inflammation" of the body

The chronic inflammatory process is not only the cause of many diseases but also a factor that determines the rate of aging. This is the opinion of Claudio Franceschi, Professor at the University of Bologna (Italy) and the head Of the research laboratory of system medicine of healthy aging at Lobachevsky University (Nizhny Novgorod, Russia).

Claudio Franceschi is one of the founders of the "Inflamm-aging" theory, according to which aging is a general inflammatory process that affects all organs. It is inflammation that underlies the development of such" age-related " diseases like atherosclerosis, Alzheimer's disease, cardiovascular diseases, and type 2 diabetes.

Therefore, early detection of biomarkers of inflammation is necessary for timely preventive measures to prevent diseases that accelerate aging. Experts believe that their range should be expanded: in addition to studies of the level of C-reactive protein, interleukins, and other traditional biomarkers of inflammation, it is needed to include additional biomarkers that characterize the work of the immune system. For example, it is proposed to determine the level of T-and B-lymphocytes, monocytes, etc.

It also helps to predict the rate of aging and take measures to identify factors that increase the risk of developing chronic inflammation. Among these factors, Claudio Franceschi includes the history of vaccinations, the stresses that a person is exposed to throughout life, nutrition, level of physical activity, ecology, as well as socio-cultural factors.

Currently, a large-scale project "Digital personalized medicine for healthy aging" is being implemented at Lobachevsky University. Claudio Franceschi, along with other scientists, is working to identify new biomarkers of inflammation, as well as factors that provoke its development and accelerate the aging process.
