Scientists were able to stop the spread of the protein that leads to Alzheimer's disease

American researchers have found out how the movement of toxic tau-protein from a neuron to a neuron emerges and were able to stop this process in mice for the first time. The new approach has great potential to develop effective treatment for Alzheimer's disease.

LRP1, a low-density lipoprotein, plays a key role in the mechanism of tau-protein proliferation in the brain. This protein is located on the membrane of brain cells and is taken part in several biological processes.

To "get to know each other," the protein breaks down the amino acid lysine and then gains access to the neuron. In this way, a dangerous protein is spread in the brain.

Scientists have suggested that reducing the expression of LRP1 may "protect" neurons from the penetration of the toxic protein. They conducted experiments on genetically modified mice and saw that this method worked: protein blocking stopped the movement of tau from one neuron to another.

Now the researchers intend to find out whether this approach can be used to develop therapy against Alzheimer's disease in humans.
