The vaccine against tuberculosis reduces the risk of developing Alzheimer's fourfold

BCG vaccination is designed to prevent tuberculosis. However, its ability to stimulate the immune system is used in other areas of medicine, for example, to prevent repeated cases of cancer. Scientists from the Department of Microbiology and molecular genetics at Hebrew University found that the TB vaccine helped to four times reduce the risk of developing Alzheimer's disease.

1371 people were under the supervision of specialists. The average age of the participants was 68 years, all of them received BCG vaccination to prevent recurrence of bladder cancer. The follow-up period for the study participants was eight years – during which time some patients developed Alzheimer's disease.

However, comparing the data with the results of the survey of people from the control group, the scientists concluded: Alzheimer's was four times less common in patients who had been vaccinated against tuberculosis than in those who had not been vaccinated. At the same time, the fact of vaccination did not affect the probability of developing another neurodegenerative disease – Parkinson's disease.

However, the scientists who conducted the study do not believe that all older people should be vaccinated against tuberculosis to reduce the risk of age-related brain damage. In their opinion, the results of the study point to the crucial role of immune mechanisms in the development of Alzheimer's disease. This should be taken into account when developing effective drugs for the treatment and prevention of this disease.
