Heavy dependence on smoking is associated with depression

Researchers from the University of Helsinki found that people with a heavy dependence on tobacco were more likely to suffer from depression. The work was published in the journal Addiction.

Until now, there has been little research on the link between smoking addiction and depression. The new work, conducted by scientists from the University of Helsinki in collaboration with the universities of Wisconsin and Missouri, focused on various factors that motivate smoking.

The scientists analyzed data from more than 1,400 twins. Participants underwent a survey that assessed smoking cravings and the presence of symptoms of depression.

The results of the study showed that more dependent smokers, more often suffered from depression. According to experts, people with depressive disorder do not smoke for the taste. The reason seems to be related to the primary symptoms of addiction, the habit and craving for smoking, as well as the regulation of the emotional state. However, scientists have not yet been able to establish what appears first: smoking addiction or depression among those who use tobacco daily.
