A healthy heart can help to prevent dementia

Scientists at the University of Oxford had published a paper, the results of which show that control of the cardiovascular system earlier in life may serve as one of the ways to preserve the health of the brain and memory in old age.

542 elderly people took part in the study. In the experiment, respondents were given two measurements of aortic stiffness at ages 64 and 68. The subjects then underwent cognitive tests and MRI scans to assess the functioning of various areas of the brain.

It turned out that increased aortic stiffness in middle age and old age was associated with impaired memory, decreased blood supply to the brain and decreased structural connectivity between brain regions.

Thus, if all the necessary examinations of the heart and vessels are performed in time and their age-related changes are prevented, it is possible not only to postpone but also to prevent the appearance of neurodegenerative diseases.
