Healthy lifestyle helps to save memory, but only if there are right genes in the DNA

Scientists at King's College London found that the likelihood that healthy lifestyle will prevent age-related memory impairment depends on the certain genes in the DNA. That’s why diet and exercise do not directly affect the brain, but through molecular pathways whose functioning is determined by the genome.

Stem cells, the precursors of hippocampus neurons, were the object of study. This area of the brain is key to memory processes, and there is a constant formation of new nerve cells, which are a kind of "cells" for information storage. The activity of this process is influenced by diet and sport. However, in order for these aspects of lifestyle to have an impact on the hippocampus, the correct functioning of the genes is required. For example, experts found that variations in the GRB10 gene determine the relationship between adherence to a Mediterranean diet and memory performance. The "lever" for physical activity in hippocampal cells is the SIRT1 gene.

Scientists believe that it is certain variations of the genes that provide the impact of lifestyle on the formation of new stem cells in the hippocampus, the effectiveness of preventing brain aging through diet and exercise depends on their functioning.
