Hot yoga helps with depression
Hot yoga may be an effective non-pharmacological way to reduce symptoms of depression in adults, a new study has found. The classes were held in a heated room at 40°C and included 26 sequential poses and two breathing exercises. Over the course of eight weeks, participants attended at least two 90-minute classes per week.
The study involved 80 adults with moderate to severe depression, with half starting the program immediately and the other half after an eight-week waiting period. This format allowed for the separation of actual effects from mere expectations of improvement. Of the 80 participants, 65 completed the final assessment, with an average decrease of approximately 13 points on the clinical scale for depression.
The experts concluded that each additional training session was associated with an improvement of 0.72 points on the depression scale. At the same time, the effect was not lost over time, and people continued to feel better even after 30 sessions. The positive results were observed regardless of age, gender, education level, or the use of antidepressants. Participants on medication showed comparable improvements compared to those who did not take medication.
Given that only about half of patients achieve significant improvement with standard therapy, and medications often have side effects (from foggy thinking to sleep disturbances and weight gain), these accessible and natural methods of mental health support are particularly valuable. Hot yoga, available in local studios, can be a practical addition to traditional approaches, provided that you have a medical clearance for physical activity.
