How protein alone helps the body age more slowly

The important Sirt6 protein supports aging health by maintaining a delicate metabolic balance in the body. A study published in the journal PNAS shows that it is thanks to this protein that the body is better protected from age-related diseases and retains its ability to recover longer.

How protein alone helps the body age more slowly

Sirt6 has long been called a “longevity regulator”: it helps fight inflammation, reduces the risk of diabetes and cancer, and prevents the body from weakening. Its effect resembles the effects of limited calorie intake, a regime in which the body receives fewer calories but does not lack nutrients. Such a regime in animals has been proven to prolong life and enhance natural recovery mechanisms.

One of the main effects of a limited diet is an increase in the level of the hydrogen sulfide molecule (HS). Despite its frightening name, it is an important protective gas involved in tissue healing, vascular maintenance, and brain function. With age, its level decreases, and the protective systems begin to work worse.

A new study has shown that Sirt6 acts in a similar way — it helps the body produce H₂S when it is really needed. But it does this much more precisely than dietary changes: it is able to increase the level of gas to protect cells, but at the same time it does not allow a dangerous excess. According to the head of the study, Professor Chaim Cohen, Sirt6 maintains an even balance, which is necessary for healthy aging.

The authors emphasize that precise regulation, rather than just increasing the level of HS, plays a key role in maintaining vital functions. Sirt6 controls this process on a subtle level, providing cells with the right amount of protective molecules and preventing their metabolism from overheating.

The new data complement Professor Kohen’s previous research, which has already shown that Sirt6 is able to prolong the life of mammals and reduce the manifestations of age-related disorders. Now it has become clear that one of the main mechanisms of its action is the ability to maintain the required level of hydrogen sulfide, while maintaining the functioning of recovery systems even at an older age.
