Music helps the brain recover from stress more quickly

Many people intuitively turn on calm music after a difficult day and soon feel the tension gradually ease away. Now this sensation has a scientific explanation, as a group of scientists led by Xi Qi Yu from the Chinese Academy of Sciences has found out exactly how music helps the brain and body recover from stress.

The study involved 120 healthy volunteers. To induce stress in them, the researchers asked the participants to complete arithmetic tasks within a set time limit; this test effectively simulates a stressful situation. After that, some of the subjects listened to relaxing music, while others listened to soothing sounds of water. The specialists monitored the participants’ mood, heart rate, sweating, and cortisol levels — the stress hormone. In a separate experiment, the same conditions were recreated inside an fMRI machine to see how the interaction between different brain regions changes during recovery.

It turned out that music significantly accelerates the body’s return to a calm state. Those who listened to music experienced a faster drop in heart rate and sweating, mood improved more significantly, and saliva analysis showed a more pronounced drop in cortisol levels compared to the group that listened to water sounds.

Brain scanning made it possible to see what was happening during this process. Music changed the nature of the connection between several key areas: the auditory cortex, which processes sounds; the insular lobe, which monitors bodily sensations; and the thalamus, which distributes sensory information. These changes coincided with physiological recovery, including a decrease in heart rate and other indicators of a weakened stress response. As the study’s authors note, music does not merely mask stress but creates a structural foundation that effectively reconfigures the brain’s response to tension.

The moment when the music is played is also important. Its positive effect manifested itself precisely in the recovery phase after a stressful task, not before it. It is explained that subjective musical tension works as a regulator: first, it helps break down the stress state, then it directs the brain toward the reintegration of networks, and ultimately contributes to a general reduction in arousal, returning the body to equilibrium. In other words, playing a playlist before a stressful day probably won’t help you protect yourself from stress in advance, but after a workload, calm music really does help you recover more quickly.

At the same time, the researchers say that they studied the short‑term response of healthy adults to specially selected music. To better understand how these mechanisms work in everyday life and in different population groups, further research is needed, including studies that take into account personal musical preferences and longer‑term exposure. Nevertheless, even now the work can help to understand why music can be a real factor capable of influencing brain function and helping it cope with stress.
