Dietary fats may affect the risk of developing type 2 diabetes
For the prevention of type 2 diabetes, it is not the total amount of fat consumed that is crucial, but rather its quality composition. The study focuses on the mechanisms of action of two main fatty acids: palmitic acid (saturated) and oleic acid (monounsaturated). It has been established that these compounds have opposite effects on insulin sensitivity and overall metabolic processes.
Palmitic acid, which is widely present in food products, is classified by researchers as a risk factor for the development of metabolic pathologies. At the molecular level, it initiates the accumulation of potentially toxic bioactive lipids and provokes the development of low-intensity chronic inflammation. The authors pay special attention to the destructive effects of this acid on cellular organelles, as it causes dysfunction of mitochondria and the endoplasmic reticulum. These processes lead to impaired insulin action and contribute to the progression of diabetes.
Oleic acid, the main source of which is olive oil, demonstrates a pronounced protective profile. Unlike palmitic acid, it promotes the storage of lipids in metabolically inert forms, which minimizes their impact on physiological functions. Oleic acid helps maintain proper insulin signaling in key tissues such as the liver, muscles, and adipose tissue. Additionally, it can neutralize many of the side effects caused by excessive saturated fats.
These findings explain the high effectiveness of the Mediterranean diet, which is rich in monounsaturated fats, in reducing the risk of developing type 2 diabetes. The researchers emphasize the need for a shift towards more precise nutritional strategies. When assessing the impact of fats on health, it is important to consider not only their type, but also their origin, dietary context, interactions with other nutrients, and cooking methods. Further research in this area will contribute to the development of more effective methods for preventing and managing metabolic diseases.
