Participation in events improves well-being and mood

A new scientific paper published in the International Journal of Tourism Research was conducted by researchers from the University of South Australia and Flinders University. In a survey of more than 350 South Australians, experts found that people who regularly attend live events are more likely to experience joy, inspiration and a sense of flow — the very state when you are completely immersed in what is happening and lose track of time.

Participation in events improves well-being and mood

According to the authors, regular participation in events — be it festivals, sporting events, farmers’ markets, food shows or exhibitions — not only brings instant positive emotions, but also contributes to the formation of a sustainable sense of well-being.

In addition, such events enhance engagement: a person immerses himself in what is happening and feels a real interest in what is happening, which is directly related to personal satisfaction and mental stability.

Interestingly, virtual events, according to scientists, increase the sense of achievement, but do not have a significant impact on joy, happiness or emotional immersion, unlike offline formats.

Associate Professor Eliza Kitchen from Flinders University emphasizes that the results of the study can be useful to employers, educational institutions, and local governments: “Organizations can include events in employee incentive programs, invite partners to them, or give free tickets to staff. This not only increases motivation and satisfaction, but also strengthens the corporate culture,” she says.

At universities and schools, events can also be an effective way to support students’ mental health, especially given the high levels of anxiety and depression among young people. And for municipal authorities, it is a way to establish communication between residents, strengthen a sense of community and create a comfortable social environment.

Events are not just an entertainment industry or a way to attract tourists. They are becoming an important tool for public health, improving emotional well-being and strengthening the bond between people.

The conclusion of the study is simple: if you want to feel more joy, interest and meaning, do not give up going to a festival, fair or exhibition. Even one event can make you a little happier.
