Exercising in water improves health
Physical activity is one of the key factors in prolonging life and maintaining health. But if the loads on land seem heavy or inaccessible due to joint diseases, excess weight or age, water exercises are an excellent alternative. A new study published in the journal BMJ Open Sport & Exercise Medicine confirms that training in water is not only effective, but also much milder for the body.
Activities in the pool — from water aerobics to simple walking on water — reduce stress on joints, help to stabilize blood pressure, improve coordination and contribute to weight loss. At the same time, almost as many calories are burned as with traditional workouts, and the cardiovascular system receives a moderate but stable load.
This is especially important for people with arthritis, hypertension, type 2 diabetes and other chronic diseases: exercising in water allows them to move without pain and risk of injury.
The results of 24 different clinical trials were studied, in which more than 1,200 people participated. All of them were engaged in various types of aquatic physical education — from swimming to classes in shallow water. According to the results of observations, regular water workouts improve endurance, lower blood pressure, reduce blood sugar levels and improve the quality of life.
In addition, the participants’ mood improved, their anxiety levels decreased, and their physical activity in everyday life increased.
Water training is recommended:
- older people;
- those who are recovering from injuries or surgeries;
- overweight people;
- pregnant women;
- those who want to strengthen the cardiovascular and respiratory systems without overloading.
It is not necessary to be able to swim for the benefit: most programs take place in shallow water, under the supervision of an instructor. It is optimal to practice 2-3 times a week for 30-45 minutes. Water aerobics, water walking, scuba diving and even dancing in the water are suitable.
Water exercises are a safe and effective way to maintain health and activity at any stage of life. And yet — it’s just nice, especially in hot weather.
