Level of molecules in the blood has become an indicator of a longer life

A new study has identified specific genetic markers in the bloodstream that predict the likelihood of living the next two years more accurately than age or lifestyle. A team of experts from Duke University and the University of Minnesota has discovered that small RNA molecules, known as piRNAs, serve as a reliable signal of a person’s health status over the age of 70. These microscopic particles regulate regeneration processes and the functioning of the immune system. Analysis of more than 1,200 blood samples has shown that a combination of just six of these molecules can predict short-term survival with an accuracy of 86%.

It turned out that a low concentration of certain piRNAs in the blood directly correlates with longevity. A similar pattern was previously observed in simpler living organisms, where an artificial decrease in the level of these molecules led to an increase in life expectancy. The increased content of these particles in the bloodstream can serve as a signal of hidden malfunctions in the internal systems of the body, which have not yet manifested themselves clinically.

In the course of the work, artificial intelligence and machine learning methods were used to compare 187 clinical factors and more than 800 types of small RNAs. The results confirmed that piRNA diagnostics are more effective at predicting a patient’s immediate future than cholesterol levels, physical activity, or age. Lifestyle retains its importance over long periods of time, but the biochemical test proved to be the most informative for assessing current risks.

Small RNAs control many biological processes related to aging. The next steps of the scientists will be aimed at studying how medications and changing habits can affect the concentration of these markers. The researchers plan to find out whether it is possible to purposefully reduce the level of unwanted molecules to prolong a healthy life.

This discovery makes it possible to create a minimally invasive and practical method for the early diagnosis of critical conditions in the elderly. Understanding the biological role of piRNA opens up prospects for the development of therapies aimed at slowing tissue degradation. Timely identification of risks gives doctors the opportunity to adjust their treatment strategy in time and support body functions.
