It’s important to go to bed at the same time
Sleeping less than seven and more than eight hours is associated with an increased risk of premature death. Irregular nights are especially dangerous — when a person stays up late or sleeps until lunch. The study involved more than 9,000 people, who were followed for almost 15 years. The results showed that the best option is the usual 7-8 hours of sleep at the same time. Any deviations, especially long-term ones, can be an alarming signal of hidden health problems. The work was published in the journal Scientific Reports.
Everyone knows the feeling of exhaustion after a sleepless night or a long nap until noon. But now it’s not just a matter of well-being: Korean scientists have found a link between irregular sleep and the risk of premature death.
The study involved more than 9,000 men and women from different regions of the country. Their sleep and health habits have been monitored for 15 years, which makes it possible to notice even weak trends.
The results were unexpected. People who slept more than eight hours were more likely to face the risk of death, especially men. And for women, the combination of long and irregular sleep turned out to be the most dangerous.
A short nap wasn’t good either. Although the statistical relationship was less obvious, those who slept less than seven hours had an alarming tendency to higher risks.
Scientists emphasize that not only the duration, but also the stability of sleep is important. Going to bed and getting up at different times is a bad habit that can gradually undermine your health.
Interestingly, men and women react differently. For men, it turned out to be the most dangerous thing to sleep a little irregularly or too much, but regularly. Women, on the contrary, have a long but confused sleep. The reasons may lie in hormones, stress, and lifestyle.
According to the authors, the best option is obvious: about 7-8 hours of sleep a day and as clear a regime as possible. Anything that goes beyond that should be considered as a possible signal from the body about problems.
