The widespread use of video games in recent decades has made them a key factor in shaping the daily routines and biological rhythms of billions of people. The impact of this form of leisure on health is not necessarily negative or positive. It depends on how, when, and for what purpose a person plays. A new scientific review published in the journal Nutrients shows that gaming can serve as a stress-relieving tool while also causing sleep and nutrition disturbances.

Modern research pays special attention to the quality of night rest. The problem lies in the impact of “blue light” from screens, which suppresses the production of melatonin, a hormone responsible for falling asleep. In addition, strong emotional and intellectual excitement during the game prevents the body from quickly entering a state of rest. As a result, evening gaming sessions often lead to late bedtime, reduced sleep depth, and daytime drowsiness.

Physical activity of gamers is often reduced due to the “substitution effect”. Time that could have been spent walking or exercising is replaced by sedentary activities. This leads to a decrease in overall energy expenditure and a feeling of fatigue. Although there are active games (exergames) that require physical movement, they have not yet gained widespread adoption as a stable replacement for traditional exercise.

Changes in eating behavior are manifested through the phenomenon of unconscious food consumption. When attention is fully focused on the game process, the brain becomes less sensitive to signals of satiety. This leads to players consuming more calories, opting for quick snacks and sugary drinks. Often, gamers skip meals, replacing them with late-night dinners, which can negatively impact their metabolism.

However, the psychological aspects of gaming also highlight its positive aspects. For many individuals, video games serve as an effective coping mechanism for stress and social isolation. The opportunity to connect with friends in a virtual environment and engage in cognitive relaxation helps restore emotional balance after a busy work or schoolday. However, if games become the only way to escape from problems, it can lead to the formation of addictive behavior.

The final impact of games on the body is described through a biopsychosocial model. This means that the final outcome depends on a combination of biological factors (age, gender), psychological state, and social environment. For example, for older adults, specially designed games can be beneficial for maintaining cognitive functions, while for teenagers, excessive gaming often poses risks to physical development.

To maintain health, scientists recommend adopting a conscious approach to gaming. The main measures to prevent negative consequences are to control the amount of time spent in front of the screen (especially in the evening), to take regular breaks for physical activity, and to avoid eating while playing video games. Understanding these mechanisms allows us to use video games as a useful tool for relaxation without compromising our long-term health.
