Bright daylight helps you sleep better

According to new data, brighter and more stable daytime lighting is associated with earlier falling asleep, improved sleep quality, and a higher proportion of deep sleep. The results were obtained not in a laboratory, but in real-life conditions, which highlights the important role of light in regulating biological rhythms.

89 adult volunteers participated in the study. Everyone wore an illumination sensor that captures melanopic light*, which has the strongest effect on the body’s internal clock, as well as a consumer sleep tracker. Additionally, the participants kept daily sleep diaries. As a result, the scientists collected more than 500 days of observations.

Data analysis revealed several patterns. People who spent more time in bright daylight tended to go to bed earlier and wake up earlier. Stable, less chaotic light patterns throughout the week were correlated with healthier sleep patterns. Consistency was particularly important, and those with less extreme fluctuations between dim and bright light exhibited more pronounced deep sleep in the first half of the night, which is crucial for recovery, memory consolidation, and overall health.

The study also addresses the issue of modern lifestyle. During the day, people are most often in indoor environments with much lower levels of natural daylight, and in the evening, they are exposed to bright artificial lighting, which their bodies are not evolutionarily adapted to. This imbalance has been linked to chronic health issues and an increased risk of mortality. The study shows that these adverse patterns can be tracked in everyday life, and simple habits, such as spending more time in daylight, can significantly improve nighttime sleep.

Another interesting finding is the accuracy of self-reported sleep data. Overall, the participants’ subjective reports were consistent with the data provided by the sleep trackers. However, when sleep disorders occurred, such as a decrease in deep or REM sleep, the discrepancy between how the person rated their sleep and objective measures increased.

According to experts, stable and bright daytime light exposure is potentially an important factor for healthy sleep. The use of low-cost consumer devices allowed for a naturalistic study and provided a simple yet significant message for public health. Brighter days can lead to better nights, and maintaining a consistent light schedule can help reinforce the body’s internal rhythms.

Melanopic light is light that affects the body not through the formation of an image in the eye, but through special light-sensitive retinal cells (ipRGCs) that contain the photopigment melanopsin. These cells are not involved in visual perception, but they play a key role in regulating circadian rhythms, which are internal biological cycles that control sleep-wake cycles, body temperature, hormone production, and other processes.

As a result, the body reacts accordingly: during the day, light helps to synchronize biorhythms, maintains alertness and concentration, and in the evening, it suppresses the production of melatonin (the sleep hormone), preparing the body for rest.
