Taurine from energy drinks can feed cancer and destroy bones

Last year, the scientific community was rocked by the news that the popular supplement taurine, which is often found in sports nutrition and energy drinks, turned out to be the fuel for leukemia. However, the bad news did not end there. The same team of researchers from the Wilmot Cancer Institute found out that the process of feeding the tumor has another dangerous side effect. When cancer cells absorb an amino acid, they literally eat up healthy tissues. As a result, bones, for which taurine is vital for strength, remain without nutrition and become brittle.

Taurine from energy drinks can feed cancer and destroy bones
Bone marrow is a unique environment where blood and bone tissue cells are born. Leukemia often hides and develops here. Dr. Jivisha Bajaj, who led the study, explains the situation simply: there is fierce competition. Cancer cells behave aggressively and intercept all available taurine. For normal stem cells (MSCs), which are supposed to build a skeleton, this is a disaster. Without the necessary building materials, they cannot fully perform their work. It turns out to be a paradox: a substance that normally strengthens the body, in conditions of illness, becomes the cause of its destruction, as it gets to the wrong guys. Initially, scientists did not plan to study bones. Kristina Kashuba, a graduate student in the laboratory, noticed the oddity during experiments with mice. Rodents lacking the ability to absorb taurine had very weak and brittle skeletons. This observation led the team to dig deeper. The analysis showed that bone stem cells have special transport channels for this amino acid. If this flow is blocked, the cells age prematurely and lose their ability to renew bones. This discovery poses a difficult dilemma for doctors: blocking taurine can stop cancer but kill bones, and its supplements can strengthen the skeleton but feed the tumor. Taurine is a naturally occurring substance that we get from meat, fish, and eggs. It is usually useful for a healthy person. But in the context of oncology, everything is changing. The tumor is able to intercept resources intended for normal life, using them for its growth. Bajaj strongly recommends that cancer patients refrain from taking taurine supplements without consulting a doctor. An energy drink or dietary supplement can play a cruel joke, increasing the disease instead of giving strength. Understanding these subtle mechanisms will help in the future to create more accurate drugs that will starve cancer without harming the rest of the body.
