Daylight can reduce the risk of dementia
Scientists have discovered a link between daylight exposure and the risk of developing dementia. The study was published in the journal General Psychiatry. The study involved 87,577 adults. To measure daylight exposure, participants wore wrist-mounted accelerometers with built-in light sensors. The average follow-up period was 8.1 years. During this time, 741 participants were diagnosed with dementia.
Data analysis showed that an average daily light exposure above 1,000 lux (comparable to the brightness of a cloudy day outside) is associated with a 16% reduction in dementia risk. Longer exposure to bright light, at least 5,000 lux, was associated with an additional reduction in risk.
Of particular note, less than 0.7 hours per day of bright daylight exposure was a more significant predictor of dementia than six established risk factors for the disease. However, there was no significant association between the level of night lighting and the risk of dementia.
According to study author Hongliang Feng from Guangzhou Medical University (China), daytime lighting may become a new indicator of dementia risk.
Scientists suggest that the effect is related to the effect of light on circadian rhythms, the body’s internal biological clock. Their stable operation is important for maintaining cognitive functions, and light disturbances can increase the risk of neurodegenerative changes over time.
However, the researchers emphasize that this is an association, not a causal relationship. Further research is needed to better understand the mechanisms and test the potential of using light therapy to prevent dementia.
