Greek yogurt reduces inflammation after exercise

Fermented dairy products can enhance the recovery of the body after exercise. The study found that young men who consumed Greek yogurt after exercise had lower levels of inflammatory markers than those who ate carbohydrate pudding.

After physical activity, inflammatory parameters such as interleukin-6 and tumor necrosis factor (TNF-α) temporarily increase in the body. Over time, regular exercise reduces their level, but choosing a diet after exercise can enhance or weaken this effect.

Dairy products are traditionally considered a suitable option for recovery due to protein, carbohydrates, electrolytes and antioxidant components. Greek yogurt is characterized by a high concentration of protein and probiotics, which additionally affects immune processes and the intestinal microbiota.

The experiment involved 30 healthy men aged 18-25. They were divided into two groups: one received Greek yogurt, the other received pudding. For 12 weeks, all participants engaged in strength and plyometric exercises three times a week.

There were three portions of yogurt or pudding on training days, and fewer on rest days. Blood samples were taken from volunteers to analyze key markers of inflammation.

– In the yogurt group, there was a decrease in interleukin-6 and no increase in TNF-α, whereas in the participants with carbohydrate pudding, these indicators worsened
– Greek yogurt also increased the level of anti-inflammatory interleukin–10
– In both cases, exercise reduced the overall level of inflammation, but the effect was enhanced by adding yogurt.

Scientists note that Greek yogurt may be a more effective option for post-workout nutrition compared to carbohydrate-based foods. However, the results apply only to healthy young men, and more research is needed for other populations.
