Carrot fiber strengthens the intestines and helps the immune system
In the modern world, nutrition is increasingly shifting towards refined, fiber-poor foods. The lack of these substances leads to a weakening of the intestinal microflora, and along with this, the overall stability of the body decreases. Therefore, the discovery made by a group of specialists looks especially important. Just four weeks of taking a special type of dietary fiber from carrots showed an amazing effect: the growth of beneficial bacteria in the intestine, improved digestion and activation of the body’s protective cells. Such a simple step can be a new way to maintain health without too much effort.
A team of researchers tested the effect of a special type of fiber isolated from carrots. The volunteers, aged 18 to 70, received 500 milligrams of the supplement or a placebo for a month. All participants submitted samples and took questionnaires to assess changes in their well-being and bowel function.
After just three weeks, the number of bifidobacteria, one of the main guards of the microbiome, increased dramatically in those who received carrot fiber. These microorganisms help to absorb vitamins, protect the mucous membrane from pathogens and support the immune system.
Additionally, it was noted that the stool became denser, the indicators of diarrhea decreased, and the level of physical activity remained, whereas in the control group it fell. The samples also revealed a slight increase in isobutyric acid, a compound associated with the normal functioning of the intestine.
Equally important, the number of active dendritic cells in the blood increased, which are key participants in immune defense. They are the first to react to dangerous microorganisms and trigger the body’s response. Although scientists emphasize that this does not yet mean a global strengthening of immunity, the trend looks encouraging.
At the same time, experts note that the study participants were already eating quite a lot of fiber. Therefore, for people whose diet is poorer in vegetables, the effect of carrot fibers may be even more noticeable.
Most importantly, the supplement is easily tolerated, without bloating and other side effects, which makes it convenient even for those who react poorly to other types of prebiotics.
