Neurons help reduce stress and improve heart health
American researchers have discovered a way to simultaneously reduce stress levels and improve cardiovascular health. It turned out that activation of certain nerve cells in the brain’s amygdala helps reduce anxiety and normalize blood pressure.
The link between psycho-emotional state and heart health has long been studied, but now scientists have been able to explain this mechanism at the cellular level. In an experiment with laboratory mice, experts from the University of Georgia found that stimulation of neurons with AT2R receptors leads to a decrease in anxiety and normalization of blood pressure. It is these cells that are responsible for the inhibition of excessive activity of the nervous system, helping the body to relax.
The results of the experiment suggest new approaches to treating hypertension and anxiety disorders. The researchers found that it is possible to activate AT2R-neurons not only with the help of sophisticated technologies, but also medically. This offers hope for the development of drugs that can help lower blood pressure and anxiety without severe side effects.
Interestingly, the effects on these neurons can also occur naturally. According to the researchers, meditation, breathing practices and tai chi activate the same processes that were identified in the experiment. That is why people who regularly engage in such techniques, note an improvement in well-being, stress reduction and normalization of heart function.
Specialists plan to continue studying AT2R-neurons and test their activation in humans. One possible way is to deliver special drugs directly to the brain, for example, through a nasal spray. If the hypothesis is confirmed, we can expect the emergence of innovative means for the treatment of cardiovascular and anxiety disorders.
