Vitamin C helps with heart disease

People with type 2 diabetes have a particularly high risk of cardiovascular disease. But there’s a simple solution on your plate – fresh fruits and vegetables. Italian medical researchers have found that natural vitamin C from food may be an important defense against heart and vascular problems. Their findings were published in the scientific journal BMC Nutr.

Vitamin C helps with heart disease

In Italy, experts analyzed the health of 200 people diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and found a strong link between the level of vitamin C in the body and the risk of cardiovascular disease. Turns out: the higher the concentration of vitamin C, the less frequent the occurrence of heart and vascular complications.

One in eight participants suffered from a severe deficiency of this vitamin. In their blood, the level of ascorbic acid fell below the established minimum, and many have already been diagnosed with cardiovascular pathologies. At the same time in the diet of such people almost no fresh fruits and vegetables.

Those found to be deficient had higher triglyceride levels and low levels of “good” cholesterol. This suggests a deeper metabolic malfunction that can amplify risks at all levels, from blood pressure to blood vessels to kidneys.

The use of diabetes and cholesterol medications had no effect on vitamin C levels – meaning the problem is clearly not related to treatment, but to lifestyle and diet.

The numbers back this up. Those who ate less than one vegetable or fruit a day had vitamin C levels barely above 28 µmol/L. And in those who consumed more than three servings a day, levels rose to nearly double. Important to note: this is natural vitamin C from food, not from jars.

Women had higher levels of vitamin C, even though they consumed about the same amounts as men. This may indicate absorption patterns or simply a more careful attention to nutrition in women.

The authors emphasize: although vitamin C supplements were seen as a possible defense, in real life it is natural sources that provide the most benefit. Supplements can sometimes even be useless or harmful in diabetes.

A diet with plenty of fresh produce is one of the most effective strategies for preventing diabetes complications. Research shows that the daily choice between an apple and a cookie is not just a matter of taste, but a matter of health.

The conclusion is clear: natural vitamin C is an ally in the fight for health.
A diet emphasizing fruits and vegetables can reduce risks even in people with already established diabetes. It is a safe and natural way to support the body, especially when it comes to the heart.
